MMSU students and student-led organizations turned to social media and launched donation drives for families affected by the fire that razed the City of Batac Public Market on Sunday, July 05.
Based on their posts, the initiatives are accepting monetary and in-kind donations to aid families displaced by the incident.
Among them is the University's highest governing body, the University Student Council (USC), which organized the โOne Stallions Donation Drive.โ
โAs one university, let us come together to extend a helping hand. Every contribution, no matter the amount, will go toward providing assistance to MMSU stakeholders, with priority given to students and the families of students who own or operate stalls at the Batac Public Market,โ the post read.
The Movement of Ilocos Norte DOST Scholars (MINDS) also started a fundraising campaign called Project Namnama โto assist the families, vendors, and members of the community affected by the incident.โ
Similarly, the College of Health Sciences (CHS) and College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Student Councils (SCs) have likewise initiated their own charity drive.
โIn response to the recent fire that affected the Batac Public Market, the CHS Student Council opened a Donation Drive to support the affected families and vendors as they rebuild their lives,โ the CHS SC said.
โThe College of Arts of Sciences Student Council (CAS SC) aims to provide a helping hand through CASaranay. Through this initiative, a donation drive will be conducted to collect funds and other materials that are necessary in aiding those who are affected from the said incident,โ CAS council shared in their facebook post.
Meanwhile, Mark Angelo Baga, a third-year BS Nursing student and son of one of the affected vendors, also appealed for support online, encouraging fellow students, youth leaders, and organizations to organize donation drives that would "provide much-needed assistance to the families affected by this devastating fire."
โDhanaya Nicole Alviana Vera, a third-year BS in Psychology student, has likewise rolled out a fundraising campaign for those affected.
Initial investigations revealed that the fire broke out at around 8:50 PM, which escalated quickly, engulfing the dry goods and eatery sections of the market.
In an interview with SIRMATA, City of Batac Mayor Mark Christian Chua revealed that the blaze was raised to the fourth alarm. The fire was declared under control at 10:30 PM on Sunday and was fully extinguished at 6:15 AM, the following day.
According to reports, 131 stalls were gutted by the fire, affecting hundreds of vendors. As of writing, however, the exact cause of the incident and the total extent of the damage have yet to be determined. No casualties were recorded.
โHowever, Chua reminded the public to verify the legitimacy of online donation drives before making contributions.
โPlease be careful po sa mga donation drive natin, marami diyan nagpopost na we are not sure kung legitimate or illegitimate,โ Chua said.โโ
โRelief operations are ongoing, while some affected vendors have been temporarily relocated to the City's Bagsakan Center.
