Think you are ready for Machu Picchu? Think again.

Before you pack your bags for the ultimate Incan adventure, here are 3 game-changing facts about Logistics and Climate that most tourists completely miss until it is too late.

The Altitude Plot Twist: Ironically, Machu Picchu sits at 2,430 meters (7,972 ft), which is actually lower than Cusco (3,400m / 11,152 ft). The real danger of "soroche" (altitude sickness) hits the moment you land in Cusco. Pro tip: Spend your first 2 days resting and sipping Coca tea in Cusco or the Sacred Valley BEFORE heading to the citadel.

The 3-Step Booking Rule: You cannot just show up. To get there seamlessly, you must lock down three separate bookings well in advance:

Your official Machu Picchu entrance ticket (they sell out months ahead).

Your train ticket (Inca Rail or PeruRail) from Cusco/Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes.

Your Consettur bus ticket (the 30-minute shuttle that takes you from the town up to the ruins).

No ID, No Entry: This is strict. You MUST bring the exact physical Passport or ID you used to buy your tickets online. Digital photos or screenshots on your phone will NOT be accepted at the gate.

WHAT NO ONE TELLS YOU ABOUT MACHU PICCHU (AVOID GETTING STOPPED AT THE GATE)

If you are planning your dream trip to the Inca citadel, be careful. Here are two strict rules that park rangers enforce without exception:

THE BACKPACK SIZE LIMIT
If your backpack is larger than 40x35x20 cm (15x13x8 inches), it will not be allowed inside. You will be forced to leave it at the storage lockers at the entrance.
The Problem: Since the circuits are one-way only, you will finish your tour at a different exit point. You will have to walk a long distance back to the entrance just to retrieve your bag. Bring a small daypack only.

NO FLAGS, BANNERS, OR COSTUMES
Machu Picchu is a Sacred Sanctuary, not a photo studio. It is strictly forbidden to:

Unfurl national or sports flags.

Show "Happy Birthday" signs or advertising banners.

Wear costumes or fancy dress.
If you try to take a photo with a flag, the guards will blow their whistles immediately and may confiscate the item. Respect the site and follow the rules to avoid being escorted out.

Share this with your travel partner so you are not caught off guard.
