🌟Mānawatia a Matariki! Matariki mā Puanga!
Also known as Rigel, Puanga is the brightest, white whetū (star) in the Orion constellation. It rises higher in the sky than Matariki, so it is easier for the iwi and hapū that can’t see Matariki from their location. The rising of Puanga marks the new year for many iwi from the west and the South Island, including our mana whenua in Pōneke.
Let’s celebrate the Māori New Year with the rising of Puanga/Matariki – check out some pukapuka (books ) in our Matariki display collection to find out more about Puanga and Matariki and how you can celebrate this special new year with your whānau!
