Seamless care, strong teams, and a model built around community needs.

A new feature from NZ Doctor shines a light on the innovative and integrated approach to healthcare at Te Kūiti Medical Centre.

For more than 30 years, the team has worked alongside Te Kūiti Hospital to provide connected care across general practice, emergency care, hospital services, and the wider community — ensuring patients can receive high-quality care close to home.

From a multidisciplinary workforce and expanded clinical roles, to training the next generation of rural health professionals, Te Kūiti Medical Centre demonstrates what is possible when rural teams work together with a shared purpose.

As Dr Keith Buswell highlights, the strength of the model comes from continuity of care — supporting patients throughout their health journey while enabling clinicians to work at the top of their scope.

Congratulations to the Te Kūiti Medical Centre team for showcasing the strength, innovation, and dedication that exists across rural health.

RuralFest 2026 | Call to Action

At RuralFest 2026, Jane George, Co-Chair of Hauora Taiwhenua's Rural Scientific, Technical, and Allied Health Chapter, delivered a clear call to action for the future of New Zealand's rural health workforce.

"Develop and implement a Rural Health Workforce Plan."

Jane called for a comprehensive Rural Health Workforce Plan, informed by Geographic Classification for Health (GCH) data and backed by a fully resourced implementation programme that supports locally led solutions across workforce attraction, education, training, recruitment, and retention.

A sustainable rural health workforce doesn't happen by chance. It requires long-term planning, investment, and policies that recognise the unique needs of rural communities and the people who care for them.

Listen to Jane's call to action from RuralFest 2026.
