Things My Mum Probably Didn't Know About 😂😂 - School Holidays in the 90s.
PART 1
What did you get up to in the school holidays when you were a kid?

Over the next week or two, I'm going to share three stories from my small-town 90s childhood. Looking back, they were equal parts adventure, freedom, questionable decision-making, and fun.

One school holiday, a friend and I packed a picnic and rode our bikes to the river which was less than a 1km from my house. My lunch was carefully packed in a plastic shopping bag hanging from my handlebars. A foolproof plan, obviously.

About halfway there, the bag swung into my front wheel spokes. The spokes sliced straight through my drink bottle full of Raro, soaking my egg sandwiches, my Roll-Up, and pretty much everything else in the bag.

Did we turn around? Of course not.

We carried on to the river anyway. I shared my friend's lunch, spent the day swimming and exploring, and when I got home I quietly hid the destroyed drink bottle because I didn't want Mum finding out what had happened.

Looking back, I need to thank my mum for the freedom she allowed my siblings and I to have. I was about 10 years old, I didn't have a cell phone, she know where we were headed and I know what time I needed to be home and that was about it. It was one of those ordinary type of days that somehow became a lasting memory.

Now it's your turn...

What's one school holiday adventure you had as a kid?

To celebrate our Winter Holiday Programmes, everyone who shares a story (no matter how long) in the comments will go in the draw to win a free programme day this winter.

(And yes, there are two more stories coming soon including one involving a lamb and another involving a very questionable use of a culvert...)
