We've been absolutely blown away by all the attention on the Disability Support Services Bill. We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who engaged with us, whether you read our article, shared your story, submitted on the Bill, liked and commented, or had discussions with whΔnau. While it's been a tough time, it's powerful to see so many people come together on an issue. We're not giving up the fight.
Oral submissions to Select Committee wrapped up this week. It wasn't easy, but we were able to secure a last-minute slot on Tuesday. A recording is available on our website.
The Bill is now undergoing review. We'll keep you updated on what happens next. In the meantime, whether you're a long time follower or just discovered us, we hope you stick around. π

Some are expressing frustration or confusion, others sharing that they submitted. Image has rounded corners, a white border, and the CCS Disability Action icon in the top left corner.

If you're new here, you may have missed the glimpses of history we shared last year in celebration of our 90th anniversary.
This powerful photo, taken in 1935, shows delegates from 17 branches attending our first ever AGM in Wellington.
Explore our rich past and take a virtual walk down memory lane through our Memories Hub β link in the comments.
Image description: A group of well-dressed men and women, looking directly at the camera, are standing in the doorway and on the front steps of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand in Wellington. The bank building is made out stone blocks and two columns are carved into the stone on either side of the doorway entrance. The photo is in black and white. A green square icon, with rounded corners, on the top right-hand-corner of the image contains white text that reads: 90 years. The β0β in the 90 has a sparkle placed on the top of it.

The NZ Police Disability Roadmap 2026 could be a turning point β but a roadmap is only as good as its implementation.
Disabled people are more likely to experience crime, often face extra barriers interacting with Police, and are disproportionately represented in prison settings. That's why Debbie Ward, National Disability Leadership Coordinator, breaks down the Police Disability Roadmap in this article, linked in the comments below.
We're encouraged that NZ Police recognises the need for this framework, and we welcome their consultation efforts. We'll be watching to see if the commitments on paper turn into consistent, rights-based policing in real life.

Disabled people exist in all communities, including the rainbow community. That's why we're proud to be participating in the Out on the Shelves campaign this year! ππ
Run by InsideOUT, Out on the Shelves is a resource for books with rainbow themes and characters. Every June (Pride Month!), the campaign supports libraries to grow their collections and help connect rainbow people to their stories and each other.
Librarian Krissy has put together a wonderful display of relevant books available in our Dunedin library. Which one would you check out (pun intended)?
Video description: Krissy shows a rainbow themed display of books spread over three shelves decorated with a rainbow pinwheel, flag, and garland. Books include Queerly Autistic, The Times I Knew I Was Gay, Gender Identity, Trans Teen Survival Guide, You-ology, Same-Sex Parents, and more.
