In the wild days of Central Otago’s gold rush, fortune seekers, rogues, opportunists and pioneers carved out claims along some of the richest rivers in the world. With little trust in distant authority, the diggers enforced their own rough and ready code — built on reputation, stern looks, hard words, and the occasional threat of rough handling.
