Pain can be frustrating, confusing, and sometimes frightening. But pain doesn’t always mean damage.
For many people, the answer isn’t “push through it” - but it also isn’t avoiding movement altogether.
Here are 4 ways we modify exercises when the movement is painful:
Reduce range of motion
Sometimes moving through a smaller range is enough to keep someone active while reducing irritation.
Adjust load or resistance
Less weight doesn’t mean less effective. Reducing load can help rebuild confidence and tolerance.
Change the exercise variation
A movement might not be the problem - the variation might be. Small changes in position, equipment, or support can make a big difference.
Modify tempo or volume
Slowing movements down, reducing reps, or allowing more recovery can help the body adapt without excessive flare-ups.
The goal isn’t always to stop movement.
Often, it’s finding the right way to keep moving.
