On the shortest day of the year, 21 June 1976, Hawke’s Bay was blanketed in snow. Known as the Great Snow of 1976, the event occurred when an intense Antarctic blast swept across the country, bringing snow to unusually low levels. The storm was so severe and widespread that it brought the motu to a standstill. The photos show snow on Te Mata Peak, and the Napier-Taupo Road near Titiokura.
