Dets for tomorrow 🏳️‍🌈

Today is Waitangi Day here in New Zealand a day that for me is a reminder to pause and reflect on the agreement, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, that was signed between Māori and the British Crown.

Today that reflection has centred around gratitude for tikanga | protcols specifically rāhui

A rāhui (a temporary prohibition/ban) designates what can be done for a specified time in a particular place that may have become tapu (sacred, prohibited, restricted) for a time or be recovering from some adverse event.

Rāhui is an example of a tikanga that arises from the principle of kaitiakitanga (guardianship) and helps to safeguard tapu and mana.

After the advese events of fires in National Park, the slip at Mount Manganui and now after the catastrophic flooding of the Moa Point sewerage treatment plant.

The rāhui is the space for the land/waters to come back into balance and to protect humans.

Without that guidance and knowledge the land or waters could end up making more of the ecosystem sick.

So thank you to the Rangatira who put the rāhui in place. I’m so grateful for your knowledge and foresight. You are in my thoughts and prayers as you navigate this challenging time.

It’s been wonderful to spend time with chosen whanau at Vinegar Hill. Meeting more beautiful souls and making friends. And passing on the gifts of knowledge through Drag School.

Its really filled my cup after a very challenging year.
