Waikato Waters, a new council-controlled organisation serving six districts, is officially moving from its establishment phase to full operations on July 1. The launch event in Cambridge tomorrow morning features addresses from Local Government Minister Simon Watts, Waikato Waters chair Elena Trout, Hauraki District Council Mayor Toby Adams, and Iwi representatives. The CCO is the largest of its kind to be established under the Local Waters Done Well reforms.
As Waikato Waters begins operations, its stated focus includes infrastructure management alongside commitments to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the mauri (life force) of the water. According to Poutiaki Taiao Norman Hill, the new operational model is intended to facilitate partnerships with tangata whenua. Hill stated that by focusing on water health and iwi aspirations, the organization aims to move beyond standard asset management toward investment that supports both local iwi and environmental outcomes.
