Commercial fishing, when done well, is one of the great proofs that humans can take from nature and think about the future at the same time.

But the sea isn’t just full of fish; it’s full of seabirds turning up to the buffet uninvited, and they pay the price when we get lazy with our gear and our habits.

The encouraging part is we already know how to fix a lot of this: smarter hooks, better line weighting, small changes in timing and technique that keep birds in the sky and still put fish in the hold.

If we design for seabirds on purpose, not as an afterthought, we don’t just protect wildlife, we prove that “sustainable fishing” is a practical behaviour, not a pious slogan

Talking to people who’ve seen it all before is great. They know which rules are arbitrary, and which ones, like oxygen, you ignore at your peril.
