Marie and the Atom was a New Zealand post-punk band active between 1983 and 1985 - and the first all -female group to be released on Flying Nun Records.

Today, we’re thrilled to share that Michael Brown, Music Curator at the National Library of New Zealand, has featured Marie and the Atom in a new blog post!

Michael takes a fascinating deep dive into two of our pieces from the 1985 EP Spit It Out — “Torch” and “Yellow Tulip” — which magically emerged after four intense days of recording at The Lab Studio in Auckland, with Terry Moore engineering, Sarah Westwood on viola and vocals, and Gill Civil, on piano, synthesizer, vocals, and guitars.

It’s a wonderful look back at a special moment in New Zealand’s experimental music history.
