Your supplier just doubled their lead time. Again. You can't pass that on to your customers, and your cashflow can't take the hit.
Across the businesses I work with, I see the same pattern. Owners spend real energy finding cheaper suppliers, negotiating better unit prices, trimming input costs. Smart. But the conversation almost always stops at price.
It rarely touches payment terms, delivery guarantees, or what actually happens when suppliers are stretched thin and have to prioritise someone. Weak supplier relationships mean you're last in the queue during a shortage. That hits your ability to fulfil jobs, which hits your margins, which hits your ability to pay wages on time and keep the promises you've made to customers who talk to each other.
Most owners only look at supplier contracts when something's already gone wrong. By then you've lost leverage, you're scrambling, and the damage is already landing on your P&L. The relationship you've got with a supplier on a normal Tuesday determines how they treat you on a bad Friday.
KEY TO REMEMBER - you are THEIR CLIENT so you must demand and expect good service for the revenue you put their way!
Pull out your top three supplier contracts. Look at one term in each—payment window, delivery guarantee, quality consistency or how you communicate when things go sideways. Figure out whether it actually protects you or just assumes everything will go to plan.
The maths on a single delayed job can wipe out months of savings from a better unit price.

When your best people start looking elsewhere, the first instinct is to blame culture. Team nights out, better communication, more appreciation. All reasonable. But none of it fixes the underlying problem.
What actually drives good people out is chaos. Unclear job specs. No one knowing who owns what. Every second day requiring a decision from you because there's no documented standard to follow. That's exhausting for them and expensive for you.
Think about what a vacant role actually costs each month. Lost output, recruitment time, your senior staff pulled off billable work to onboard someone new. Then factor in the productivity gap while the replacement gets up to speed. The maths adds up fast.
The fix isn't more goodwill. It's fewer grey areas. When your processes are documented and the steps are clear, your team stops needing you to be the human decision tree. They self-manage. Stress drops. The job becomes worth staying for.
Pick the one process where your team hits a wall most often or circles back to you for the same call repeatedly. Write down every step as if someone new was doing it tomorrow. That document's your starting point. One process done properly, then the next.
