You can’t beat a good mascot to help separate you from the crowd (without naming names, just think clown, colonel, stick man, and spotty dog). Say hello to Scotty, a character we recently created for Scott Electrical, a locally owned electrical wholesaler with 17 branches from Kerikeri to Rotorua. Scotty epitomises all the good things about the Scott’s brand – helpful, relatable and expert. He’s making appearances in bi-monthly catalogues, EDMs and the Scott Electrical website, with more activity planned soon. Matariki is an abbreviation of ‘Ngā Mata o te Ariki Tāwhirimātea (‘The eyes of the god Tāwhirimātea’). Ranginui, the sky father, and Papatuanuku, the earth mother were separated by the offspring, one of their sons, god of the winds Tāwhirimātea, became angry, tearing out his eyes and hurling them into the heavens.

In New Zealand, this year will be our first to receive a public holiday relating to Matariki as the cluster of 9 stars, reappearing in our night sky signifies the Maori New Year. Matariki is a time of renewal and celebration of people, culture, language, spirituality and history in Aotearoa, and for remembering those that have passed on.

We look forward to celebrating the Maori New Year with the sense of kotahitanga (coming together).
