Kiribati Language Week 🌺🌈

The roots of a tree are unseen, yet they are what keep it standing.

Karina te ang, tauraoi nakon te mwioko ao kabura rikiara ni Kiribati reminds us that our language is one of those roots — anchoring us to our identity, our ancestors, and each other.

For Meei, being Binabinaine is a strength. A journey of resilience, courage, and pride. A reminder that our diversity is not a limitation, but a gift. Like language, it carries stories, wisdom, and ways of seeing the world that deserve to be celebrated and protected.

Te reirei bon te matau ae kookona — education is a magic hook and the key to knowledge.

When we learn our language, share our stories, and honour every voice in our community, we keep those roots strong so future generations can grow, flourish, and stand tall.

🌺🇰🇮 Ti aomata, ti karikirake, ti kabongana te taetae ni Kiribati. (We learn, we grow, we celebrate the Kiribati language.)

🌺🇰🇮 Mauri! Happy Kiribati Language Week.

This week, we celebrate Te Taetae ni Kiribati and this year’s theme, “Karina te ang, tauraoi nakon te mwioko ao kabura rikiara ni Kiribati.” The theme reminds us that language flourishes when it is cherished, nurtured, and carried forward by each generation.

It echoes the wisdom of the Kiribati proverb, “Te reirei bon te matau ae kookona” — education is a magic hook and the key to knowledge.

Through learning and sharing language, we strengthen our connection to culture, identity, and one another.

Whether it’s learning a new phrase, practising a greeting, or exploring a language you’ve never encountered before, every word is a step towards greater understanding and connection.

This week, let’s celebrate the richness of Te Taetae ni Kiribati and embrace the joy of learning something new 💙✨
