Do your migraines, persistent headaches and recurring neck or low‑back pain feel like separate problems — but never fully resolve? At Peek Practice we view them through a single, evidence‑based lens: some people have a more sensitive nervous system (nociplastic pain) that amplifies normal signals into ongoing pain.
As New Zealand’s only Board‑Certified Chiropractic Orthopaedist, I assess both structural drivers and central nervous system sensitivity so management addresses the real cause — not just the most painful spot. That can mean targeted structural care alongside graded activity, education and referral where needed.
If previous treatments haven’t helped, consider an expert assessment that clarifies whether multiple pains are expressions of one underlying process. Book a consultation at our Grey Lynn clinic or visit the link to read more.

Pain is an output. Not and Input. A protective output — generated when your nervous system calculates that threat outweighs safety. Pain is not a damage report per se, it is a complex interaction of factors based on perceived threat in addition to damage factors (see prior blog post).
That's why two people with similar MRI findings can have completely different pain experiences. The scan shows tissue, in other words a scan is a damage report, not a pain report. It doesn't show context, history, fear, or what happened last Tuesday.
This is the neuromatrix model — decades of neuroscience, now shaping how the best clinicians approach persistent pain.
It doesn't mean your pain isn't real. It means the story is more about you, the individual and what is happening in your life around your pain experience. This opens other avenues for treatment when applied on this basis.

Key takeaways: pain is an experience, tissues and nerves interact with context, and modern definitions reflect that complexity. Share if this changed the way you think about pain.

Pain Is Not a Damage Report — What Current Pain Neuroscience Actually Says The short answerContemporary pain neuroscience tells is that pain is the brain's protective output — not a direct readout of tissue damage. The two are related, but they are not the same thing. You can have severe structural damage with no pain. You can have severe, disabling pain with no identifi...
