Art+Object's second auction of 'Important Paintings and Contemporary Art' will take place on August 6, and suitable consignments are now invited until July 10.

The auction will be headlined by an exceedingly rare 1947 Colin McCahon painting of Nelson offered on the secondary market for the first time. Painted in the same year, and exhibited alongside, seminal works including The King of the Jews, The Valley of Dry Bones, Crucifixion according to St Mark, and Caterpillar Landscape, Nelson City Landscape (1947) was painted in one of the most significant years in McCahon's career when his signature style and self-belief as a painter emerged fully-formed. Another highlight is a magnificent Shane Cotton painting from 1997, entitled Middle North. Originally exhibited in Mori Gallery in Sydney, the painting is the most significant by the artist to appear at auction since Kaua E Raweke I Te Manu (1997), from the collection of Adrian Burr and Peter Tatham which sold for a record price in November 2021.
