How a substation works and why it matters

Most of us use electricity every day without thinking about what happens before it reaches the switch.

A substation is a bit like a traffic control centre for electricity. Power travels across the country at a very high voltage, much like cars travelling on a motorway.

Before the electricity can safely enter local neighbourhoods, it passes through a substation.

That's where a few important things happen:

⚡ The substation is the hub that directs electricity where it needs to go

Think of the transmission network as the motorway. The zone substation is the big interchange where electricity comes off the motorway and is sent onto local roads.

It does three important jobs:

⚡Takes electricity from the main network.

🔽Lowers the voltage so it is suitable for local distribution.

🏘️Sends it out along local powerlines, like roads heading into different suburbs.

Inside the substation important pieces of equipment work together to keep power flowing safely, reliably and efficiently sent through local overhead lines and underground cables to the places where we live, work and learn.

Here’s what some of them do.

⚡ The transformers act like a speed limit

Transformers work like a speed limit, lowering electricity from motorway-level voltage to a safer level for local streets, businesses and homes.

⚡ Switchgear acts like traffic lights and barriers, controlling where electricity flows.

If a tree hits a power line, equipment fails or a fault occurs, switchgear can rapidly switch off the affected section. This helps stop problems spreading through the wider network and reduces the impact on customers.

⚡ The grounding system acts like a motorway run-off ramp

If lightning strikes or a power surge occurs, the extra electrical energy needs a safe exit route. The grounding system works like a motorway run-off ramp, giving that energy a controlled path into the earth and helping protect people, equipment and the wider network.

⚡ Monitoring equipment like cameras on the motorway

Monitoring equipment provides visibility in real-time, checking that everything is flowing safely and effortlessly, just like cameras on the motorway.

Substations may sit quietly behind a fence, but they are one of the most important pieces of infrastructure in Auckland's electricity network.
