Major, unexpected changes to Accredited Employer Work visa scheme announced on 7 April 2024 by the new New Zealand government!

The changes will impact many current AEWV holders as the maximum continuous stay in New Zealand on one or more AEWVs where the employment is paid at least $29.66 will no longer automatically mean a 5 years AEWV. This also applies for visa applications for the remaining balance on AEWV. These changes will apply to anyone who applied for their first AEWV on or after 7 April 2024 or before 21 June 2023.

Many changes will have a big impact on those AEW holders currently working in ANZSCO level 4 or 5 roles.

Some ANZSCO level 4 and 5 jobs will not be affected by these changes, including: those on the Green List, or in transport and care sector agreements, and on a pathway to residence, or those earning 1.5 times the median wage ($47.41 per hour).

The length of an AEWV and maximum continuous stay for people in ANZSCO level 1 to 3 jobs will remain 5 years if earning a least $29.66 per hour or equivalent. The 5 year maximum continuous stay will also remain for Green List roles where the applicant is paid at least $29.66 per hour and is meeting all the requirements of the Green List occupation as listed.

Job Check applications will have more requirements to meet regarding the Labour Market Test, especially if the occupation is for

The employer will now need to advertise an ANZSCO level 4 or 5 role for for 21 days, rather than 14, and engage with Work and Income, and declare in the Job Check why any New Zealanders who applied were not hired. This is unless the ANZSCO level 4 or 5 role is on the Green List and meets the Green List role requirements, or
pays at least NZD$59.32 an hour (twice the February 2023 median wage).

English Language skills requirement has been introduced to future AEWV holders if employment/job offer is for an ANZSCO Level 4 or 5 role.

There are also higher work experience and qualification requirements for AEWV applicants.

There are now more requirements for employers at the accreditation and Job Check stages and during the accreditation period.
