In this video, Auckland Sleep’s founder and director, Dr Sumit Samant, talks about Myofunctional therapy. Myo means muscle so it’s all about correcting improper muscle function of the mouth and jaw. Myofunctional therapy is now widely used to treat conditions such as snoring, obstructive sleep apnoea, and TMJ disorders. This type of treatment can help individuals breathe through their nose, swallow correctly, and maintain proper tongue position.

In keeping with this month’s blog theme, Anxiety and Insomnia, Dr Samant shared an interesting case that particularly stood out to him. It highlights the importance of recognising when to seek further help, as symptoms of anxiety can sometimes be mistaken for other underlying issues. At times, there may be more contributing to poor sleep and daytime symptoms than stress alone. Conditions such as disrupted breathing during sleep due to structural obstruction or other underlying nasal symptoms are not always obvious without a more thorough assessment. The easiest way to begin your journey toward better sleep is by completing our Registration and Assessment Form (RAF), available on the website.
