Ever wonder about these beautiful stone stacks you see on the trail? I see them all along the MBC to ABC route and in so many places in the Himalayas. They’re called cairns, and they have such a wonderful story.
While they sometimes help mark the path, they are so much more than that. Building one is often a quiet, mindful act. It’s a way for travelers to offer a small prayer for a safe journey, show respect to the spirits of the mountains, or leave a wish for good fortune for those who follow.
Each stone, carefully balanced, represents a moment of focus and a real connection to the place. It’s a beautiful tradition of leaving a harmless touch of intention on the trail—a simple symbol of balance, both in the stones and within ourselves.
A dreamlike drift through the clouds. Walking into the great white void. The world reduced to a single thread of stone, leading into an ocean of mist.
