From Stinging Wild Nettle to Heritage Fashion: The Magic of Allo 🌿🧵

Did you know that one of the strongest, most sustainable natural fibers in the world grows wild in the high-altitude forests of Nepal?

Meet Allo (Himalayan Giant Nettle). While it might look like a wild, painful stinging plant to avoid, indigenous communities like the Gurung people have transformed it into a cultural treasure for generations.

For the Gurung community (especially in iconic villages like Sikles and across the Annapurna region), Allo—or Puwa—is deeply woven into their identity:
👉 The Iconic Bhangra: The traditional Gurung vest/bag combo worn proudly by men is traditionally woven from tough, hand-spun Allo fiber.
👉 A Painstaking Craft: Harvesting it requires incredible skill. Gurung weavers collect the thorny stems in the winter, boil them with wood ash to soften the fiber, wash them with clay or rice hulls, and meticulously spin them by hand.
