On September 3, the government suddenly announced a ban on all unregistered social media.
The next day, Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube, and other major platforms actually became inaccessible.

For many young Nepalis working abroad, SNS is the only way to stay in touch with their families.
SNS is not only a place for expression, but also a lifeline connecting families.

On September 8, a large protest erupted in Kathmandu.
Clashes with the police led to gunfire, leaving 19 dead and more than 300 injured.

The frustrations went far beyond SNS.
Years of corruption, distrust in politics, and anxieties about the future had already been building up.
The SNS ban was just the spark that ignited them.

On September 9, the SNS ban was withdrawn, but anger did not subside, and protests turned into riots.
Prime Minister Ali resigned.

In Kathmandu and other cities, many politicians’ houses and public buildings were set on fire.
Sadly, unrelated shops, buildings, and innocent people have also been affected.

Tribhuvan International Airport was temporarily closed, and the Nepal Army has now been deployed nationwide to maintain security.

We expect many arrests to follow, and hopefully this will be the start of Nepal’s recovery.
