Short Information about Golden Fountain (1688 AD) - Bhaktapur
King Jitamitra Malla built this courtyard with the golden fountain as part of the now-extinct Thanthu palace. The golden fountain is adorned with figures of different animals and has a three-part inscription dated 1688 AD. Hence, this fountain is very important to know about the different parts and courtyards of the then palace and its prevailing water culture and heritage. From the inscription, it is known thạt he had made wells, ponds, etc. in this courtyard.
Water falls from the goat’s head in this golden fountain. The Makara, a mythical creature, seems to swallow the goat’s head. This is a special feature of this fountain. Because of this, it is also known as ‘Duguhiti’ among locals. The holy water required for worshiping the Taleju deity is fetched from this fountain.
