My Journey: From Porter to Leader
I am Goma Thapa, and my journey as a trekking guide has been shaped by passion, resilience, and continuous learning. With over 15 years of experience, I’ve had the privilege of guiding trekkers through the breathtaking landscapes of Nepal. My work has not only made me a guide but also a leader and mentor in the trekking industry, helping to empower others along the way.
Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to guide trekkers to some of the most remote villages in Nepal, including places like Humla and the eastern regions. I’ve also guided on the popular trails like Everest Base Camp and Annapurna, giving me a broad and deep understanding of Nepal’s diverse landscapes and cultures. Each journey has been a unique experience, one that I share with my trekkers, helping them connect with Nepal’s heart and soul.
Starting from Humble Beginnings
My journey in the trekking world began after I completed my basic training with the esteemed Three Sisters organization in Pokhara. Like many, I started as a porter and trainee guide, working hard to learn the ropes of the trade. Through perseverance and dedication, I gained valuable experience and eventually moved to Kathmandu, where I began leading treks across Nepal. As I accumulated more experience, my responsibilities expanded. Today, I guide treks while managing and leading a trekking company, ensuring everything runs smoothly for our clients.
What I’ve Learned Throughout My Career
Over the years, I have learned invaluable lessons that have shaped both my approach to guiding and my role as a leader.
Patience and Adaptability: Trekking, especially in the rugged terrain of the Himalayas, requires patience and the ability to adapt to ever-changing circumstances. Whether dealing with tough weather, challenging trails, or the physical demands of the journey, I’ve learned to remain calm and composed. My priority is always ensuring that trekkers feel safe and supported.
Cultural Insight: With a degree in anthropology, I am passionate about sharing Nepal's rich cultural heritage with trekkers. I believe that trekking is not just about reaching a destination but about connecting with the local culture. I take pride in offering insights into Nepal’s traditions, helping trekkers engage deeply with the communities they visit, and fostering a genuine understanding of our way of life.
Leadership and Mentoring: My role as a guide and as a leader of a trekking company has taught me how to manage teams effectively, handle operations, and ensure that the trekking experience runs seamlessly. However, one of my greatest joys is mentoring younger guides—especially women—and empowering them to succeed in an industry where they have historically been underrepresented.
Empathy and Support: Trekking is as much a mental and emotional challenge as it is a physical one. Over the years, I’ve learned that many trekkers face fears, doubts, or anxieties during their journey. My role is to not only guide them physically but to provide emotional support, ensuring that they feel encouraged and supported during tough moments. Whether it's overcoming a difficult section of the trail or navigating personal fears, I strive to be a reassuring presence.
Resilience: As a woman in a male-dominated field, I’ve encountered my fair share of challenges. However, instead of letting these obstacles hold me back, I’ve used them as motivation. I’ve shown myself and others that women can be strong, capable leaders in the trekking industry. My resilience has become a source of inspiration for many, and I hope it encourages other women to pursue their dreams, regardless of the challenges they face.
Mentoring the Next Generation of Guides
One of the most rewarding aspects of my journey has been mentoring young female guides. I strongly believe in providing opportunities, training, and the encouragement that young women need to succeed in this industry. Through sharing my experiences and guiding them on their own journeys, I aim to create a lasting legacy—one of empowered women who continue to break barriers in the trekking world.
My Legacy
Looking back on my journey, I’ve learned that success is not simply about reaching the summit of a mountain. It’s also about the impact we have on those around us. My story is a testament to perseverance, passion, and the power of pursuing one’s dreams in the face of adversity. As I continue to guide trekkers and lead my team, my goal is to inspire others, particularly young women, to believe in themselves and make a positive difference in the world.
Reflecting on My Journey
Reflecting on my journey, I can see just how far I’ve come. From being a quiet, introverted girl to discovering my strength as a leader in Nepal’s trekking industry, the path has been one of growth and perseverance. In a country like Nepal, where the tourism sector has long been dominated by men, it was never easy. But with each step, I faced the challenges, learned from them, and slowly built the confidence to lead. It wasn’t always certain, but every experience contributed to my growth. Today, I’m not just a guide – I’m a leader, and I hope to inspire other women to pursue this path and break through the barriers, no matter how tough the journey may seem.
I am committed to helping everyone who chooses to travel here experience the authenticity of Nepal—from its breathtaking landscapes to its vibrant cultures—and I look forward to many more adventures with the amazing trekkers I have yet to meet. In addition, I am passionate about creating the best possible experience for each person who comes to Nepal. By providing the highest level of client service, I aim to ensure that every trek is not only safe and memorable but also truly transformative. Whether you’re exploring the Himalayas for the first time or returning to experience more, my commitment is to make your journey one that exceeds all expectations.
