Cryptography is the practice of secure communication, ensuring that only the intended recipients can understand the information being transmitted. It involves encoding plaintext data into an unreadable format, called ciphertext, using mathematical algorithms and encryption techniques. There are several types of cryptography:

1. Symmetric Key Cryptography: In this method, a single secret key is used for both encryption and decryption. The sender and receiver must share this key in a secure manner. Common symmetric key algorithms include AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) and DES (Data Encryption Standard).

2. Asymmetric Key Cryptography: Also known as public-key cryptography, it uses a pair of keys - a public key and a private key. The public key is used for encryption, while the private key is kept secret and used for decryption. RSA and ECC (Elliptic Curve Cryptography) are popular asymmetric key algorithms.

3. Hash Functions: These are one-way mathematical functions that generate a fixed-size output (hash) from an input data. Hash functions are used for integrity verification and digital signatures. Examples include SHA-256 and MD5 (although MD5 is considered weak due to vulnerabilities).

4. Hybrid Cryptography: It combines symmetric and asymmetric cryptography to harness the advantages of both. Typically, symmetric key cryptography is used for data encryption, and asymmetric key cryptography is used for key exchange or digital signatures.

These cryptographic techniques play a crucial role in ensuring data privacy, integrity, authentication, and non-repudiation in various applications, such as online banking, secure communication, and digital transactions.
