The Nepal Technology Innovation Center (NTIC) at Kathmandu University, in collaboration with the Global FEWture Alliance -University of Maryland, the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies, and Sanskriti Farms & Research Centre, successfully inaugurated and handed over an off-grid solar-powered wastewater treatment and reuse system at Shree Janak Secondary School, Bhakundebesi, Kavrepalanchok.
Led by NTIC, the initiative demonstrates the Center's commitment to delivering practical, climate-resilient innovations that strengthen the FoodโEnergyโWater (FEW) Nexus and improve the livelihoods of local communities.
The inauguration ceremony brought together distinguished guests, including the Ambassador of Israel to Nepal, the Mayor of Namobuddha Municipality, representatives from Kathmandu University, the University of Maryland, the Arava Institute, government agencies, local leaders, and other national and international partners. During the event, NTIC formally handed over the system and conducted hands-on training for school staff and students on its operation and maintenance.
The newly installed off-grid system treats wastewater using a nature-based Laguna treatment process powered entirely by solar energy. The treated water will be reused for irrigating the school's demonstration farm, promoting sustainable agriculture, water conservation, and experiential learning opportunities for students.
Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Dr. Bim Prasad Shrestha, Executive Director of NTIC, emphasized that the Center's mission extends beyond research to developing innovative technologies that create tangible benefits for communities. He highlighted NTIC's commitment to fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and implementing practical solutions that integrate agriculture, renewable energy, water management, and public health to address Nepal's development challenges.
The program concluded with cultural performances by the students of Shree Janak Secondary School, celebrating a successful milestone in international collaboration for sustainability, climate resilience, and community development. The project serves as a model for demonstrating how partnerships among academia, government, local communities, and international organizations can advance innovative and scalable solutions for rural Nepal.
