Online shopping in Nepal dates back to 2000 with the launch of Muncha and Thamel Dot Com the same year. It's 2020 now and we still hesitate to order online. I feel these companies were much ahead of time.

Dashain festival is around the corner. So, I want to share you the story of Thamel Dot Com starting selling Khasi/Boka online in 2001. As per Thamel Dot Com founder Bal K Joshi, this was one of the biggest local and global news from Nepal in 2001. He even traveled the world meeting heads of states sharing the goat selling story. Even some of the world's top universities have written case study about it.

An interesting fact: People used to wait in line at Tribhuvan International Airport's cargo office after their family from abroad called and mentioned they had sent khasi. They literally thought khasis were put on a cargo and sent home. :D

In reality, Nepalis living abroad would order Khasi for their family back home and make payment (remit the money). And Thamel Dot Com would deliver local khasi to the family. The picture of goat being delivered would be taken, processed in rainbow color lab, scanned, and sent to the senders as delivery confirmation. The service was limited to Kathmandu valley only though.

You might be wondering what they are doing these days. The khasi selling company which started as a cross-border ecommerce company now works as a global fintech company doing business in 15+ countries, building x-border APIs for countries in the base of the pyramid to move remittances and B2P payments from the US. It's good to see them growing, though they switched the operation model from e-commerce to fintech.
