Conservatives Abroad proudly commemorates today the centenary of the birth of Margaret Thatcher.

She was not only the first female British Prime Minister but also one of the most consequential of recent times being also responsible in the mid 1980’s for first giving voting rights to Britons overseas and helping to establish Conservatives Abroad.

80 years since victory in the Pacific, we remember the bravery that brought the war to an end.

We honour those who fought. Including family members of many of our members and supporters. We must never forget their service and the service of all those who have come since.

Conservatives Abroad mourns today the passing of one of its key founders, the Rt. Hon. Lord Tebbit CH PC.

Following the 1985 Representation of the People Act which defined ‘overseas elector’, Norman Tebbit MP had been made Chairman of the Conservative Party and asked Central Office to run a campaign to register newly enfranchised overseas citizens, which during his tenure as Chairman between 1985 to 1987 evolved into the creation of a dedicated Party organisation focused on overseas voters, which, as it remains today, was called ‘Conservatives Abroad’.

All of us at Conservatives Abroad are deeply indebted to the vision and support Norman Tebbit had for Britons living overseas and their right of enfranchisement and representation as British citizens.
