Park Appreciation Week
29/11/2021
Good morning!
Have you ever thought of what would happen if we stopped mowing the lawns in our parks? For humans, it would probably be a bit harder to sunbathe, but a lot of other species would actually lovelovelove it!
Have you ever wished you were able to identify more of the species around you when you're strolling through a park? Or wondered just how many bugs can live on the same tree? Or maybe you have heard about other initiatives in Oslo to protect biodiversity, like mowing lawns less frequently, and wonder how that could make a difference...
*
Whether you're already an expert on urban ecology, or can't tell an oak from a fir, you are welcome to join us in celebrating a city park in Oslo from Nov. 30- Dec.5! Together we will learn more about the park's diverse inhabitants, their roles in creating a healthy ecosystem, and how we could improve our parks to make them better, more generous habitats--not just for humans.
*
This week will include several activities:
- The Dream Tree: Small pieces of paper will hang from the lowest branches of a large tree. On these you can write down your wishes for how you want the park to look like.
- Walk and Talk with an Ecology student: Gigi Lish will guide you through Kampen Park with her knowledge about ecology, and show you to use an app to identify different species. Feel free to ask questions as we go!
- Deichman Tøyen: They will have a stand with a selection of books about biodiversity, city parks, and different species.
-Signs: Various signs will be placed around the park, challenging some common human perceptions of nature... "lawns mowers or habitat movers?"
-Coffee+Cacao+Pepperkake: We will have a stand in the center of the park with goodies from 10-15 on Wednesday and Thursday.
