𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐟 𝐬𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐬𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬?

Within the PHA2USE project, Dutch local water authorities, technology partners and industry are working together to create new value from wastewater streams. As part of this collaboration, Colubris developed a pilot installation for sludge acidification together with Waterschap Brabantse Delta. 🤝

The pilot, currently operating at the Nieuwveer sewage treatment plant in Breda, focuses on converting sewage sludge into fatty acids. These fatty acids form a crucial building block for the production of PHA biopolymers: biodegradable materials that could offer a sustainable alternative to fossil-based plastics.

For Bart Joosse, Senior Water Chain Technologist at Waterschap Brabantse Delta, the project is about more than technological innovation. It is about creating a circular future for wastewater treatment and recovering valuable resources from streams that are often still seen as waste. ♻️

The results from the pilots will help determine whether large-scale implementation is technically and economically feasible. For Colubris, this project shows how innovation, collaboration and circular thinking can transform wastewater into valuable, sustainable resources. ✨
