What happens in the supervision room
What actually happens in a TA group supervision session?
🪑 Everyone gets a slot. The group is small enough that you'll bring material across the series — your live cases, your case study draft, your ethical dilemmas, your script work.
👂 Peer thinking, supervisor thinking. You present. Peers reflect from the client's chair, the coach's chair, the system's chair. The supervisor names what's at the edge of awareness.
🌀 Parallel process. The group itself often replays the dynamic in the case. What's happening between you and the group is data about what's happening between you and your client (Searles, 1955, 'The informational value of the supervisor's emotional experiences'; Hawkins & Shohet, 2012).
⚖️ Ethics in real time. Not in the abstract — in this case, with this client, against this code (EATA Ethical Code; Carroll & Shaw, 2013, Ethical Maturity in the Helping Professions).
📓 Reflection between sessions. A monthly rhythm gives the work time to land. By the next session you've tried something different, and the cycle deepens.

Why supervision matters
Why does a TA candidate need ongoing supervision, on top of training?
Because theory becomes practice only in supervision.
In the workshop you learn the script questionnaire. In the client session you ask the questions. In supervision you ask the question you should have asked — and the question behind that question. Hawkins & Shohet (2012, Supervision in the Helping Professions) call this the "seven-eyed model": at any moment supervision can attend to the client, your interventions, the relationship between you, your countertransference, the parallel process between supervisor and supervisee, the wider system, and the supervisor's own response. Most of those eyes are closed when you sit alone with the case.

For CTA candidates specifically, supervision hours count toward EATA's 150-hour requirement — but the deeper value is the integrated practice that the exam actually tests.
