Wednesday, March 18th at 1:30pm I’ll be presenting a talk/masterclass examining two contrasting approaches to Miles Davis classic repertoire as performed by versions of his two classic quintets. Referencing the original versions of “Oleo” (from Relaxin’) and “So What” (from Kind of Blue) we will explore through listening, observing and philosophizing, how the playing approach and interpretation of this material developed from one group of musicians to another and what the implications are for improvising artists when it comes to interpreting “standard” repertoire or original material that is rooted in pre-established norms (genres, feels, styles, etc.). Instruments are welcome for small group playing based on our collective findings.
