Hurry - Tuesday's the day! www.summasymposium.com/register/
Introducing another set of parallel speakers: Esmée Lindenbergh & Dr. Roos de Jonge.
Topic: Androgenitaal Syndroom
You’ve just given birth: the doctors tell you they are not sure if your baby is a (little) boy or a (little) girl. You need to wait 6 days before the test results come back from the lab. How does the news affect parents and other members of the family? In addition to the inevitable medical issues what
other challenges will this bring?
A heartfelt story from a mother of a 9 year old girl with AGS (UK: CAH).
Unfortunately this parallel session will only be held in Dutch. Interested? Sign up now!

Time for another parallel speaker - this time it's a team of two! Dr. Annemarie Verrijn-Stuart & Drs. Maaike van Kuyk.
Dr Verrijn Stuart finished training as a pediatric endocrinologist in 2007 and has worked in the WKZ/UMCU since; currently as the head of the pediatric endocrinology department. Furthermore, she is the chair of the UMCU DSD Center (differences/ disorders of s*x differentiation) and also member of the national DSDNET as well as I-DSD. Her focus in pediatric endocrinology is on DSD (differences of s*x development); rare endocrine tumors and Mc Cune-Albright syndrome.
Drs M van Kuyk is a clinical psychologist and cognitive behavioral therapist. She started her career in Nijmegen at the Radboud UMC as a medical psychologist. Since 2009 she works in the WKZ/UMCU. One of her specializations is the care of children with DSD and their families.
Together they will present challenges in care for DSD patients from an endocrinologists and a psychologist point
of view.

It's time for us to reveal another speaker!
The way we've organised the symposium is that everyone can attend the first three plenary sessions and after lunch we will be dividing into smaller groups to then focus interests during two parallel sessions. For each parallel session, you will have the choice of three different speakers and their own topic of expertise. As the sessions will be held in smaller groups, they can be more interactive.
And today we're introducing one of the parallel speakers and his topic of interest: Dr. Jan Kroon – Leiden University Medical Center
His latest research focuses on deciphering why GR signaling is s*xually dimorphic, and investigates how androgen receptor signaling influences GR action in metabolic tissues. During the symposium he will elaborate on the interaction between the stress hormone cortisol and the s*x hormone testosterone (present in both men and women), and how this contributes to the development of metabolic diseases.

Dr. Kroon was educated at the University of Leiden (B.Sc.) and the VU University Amsterdam (M.Sc.), including a period abroad at Imperial College London. His PhD-project (2012-2016) investigated GR function in prostate cancer. Dr. Kroon started his first postdoc position in the group of Prof. Onno Meijer, where he examined GR signaling in metabolic disease. During this period he evaluated the utility of selective GR modulators in models for Cushing’s disease, obesity and liver steatosis.

Next up: the second plenary speaker! Topic: BRAIN.
Dr. Rachel Brouwer – University Medical Center Utrecht
The most consistent finding comparing female and male brains is a 10% difference in volume. Despite this difference in overall size, differences between adult female and male brains are rather subtle. In puberty and adolescence, there are pronounced differences in the developmental trajectory of brain morphology. Girls generally show an earlier start of brain development that is observed in the teenage years, matching the earlier start of puberty in girls compared with boys. This talk will focus on the different trajectories of development, and discuss the potential influence of hormones on brain development.
Dr. Brouwer obtained her PhD in the field of mathematics at the Center of Mathematics and Computer Science in 2005. Changing course, she subsequently started working at the department of psychiatry at the UMCU and currently works as an assistant professor in neuroimaging.
Dr. Brouwer’s main interests lie in the development of the brain during puberty. As the senior investigator on the BrainSCALE project, a longitudinal study that investigates brain development and cognition during adolescence, she examines to what extent genes, environment and hormones influence brain development. She will provide a neuroscientific perspective on how brain development in puberty differs between men and women.

Welcome to the official page for this year's SUMMA Symposium!
S*x and Gender in Medicine: Venus, Mars and Beyond...
S*x and gender are current and controversial topics, as they touch upon our identity as individuals. The symposium will explore s*x and gender development as well as s*x and gender differences in clinical practice and research. Furthermore, with gender reassignment we go beyond the definition of gender. The day will consist of several lectures, pitches and a panel discussion.
This symposium is for (bio)medical students as well as researchers, medical specialists, or anyone interested in the topic. Will we see you there?
