During a Wednesday morning meeting, KPLAO Sam, Defensity College student and NATO Command and Control Centre of Excellence staff member, conducted an in-depth workshop on generative AI, covering its history, various types, technological impact, benefits, and potential challenges for military operations.

These knowledge sharing sessions play a crucial role at our Centre of Excellence by stimulating discussions and generating new perspectives and ideas. By collaborating with students from universities across the alliance, we not only pass on our knowledge to the next generation but also gain fresh viewpoints and opinions from the academic world.

We recently added a video recording of the presentation of the paper “From Concept to Capability in the NATO’s C2 of Multi-Domain Operations: History, Evolution and Challenges” to our library.

This paper was presented by NATO C2COE Staff Oficer MAJ Ralph Dekker (NLD AF) at the 29th International Command and Control Research & Technology Symposium (ICCRTS), held in London from September 24–26, 2024. Authored by experts from multiple nations, the paper explores principles for C2 capability governance in the context of NATO operations.

In his presentation, MAJ Ralph Dekker analyzes the historical evolution of NATO’s capabilities, with a focus on the mechanisms that have driven these changes and the challenges has faced in maturing its Multi-Domain Operations ( ) and Strategic-Scale Integration (SSI) within doctrine and processes. By examining these issues, MAJ Dekker’s study provides a valuable case for C2 capability governance, contributing to the efforts of NATO-RTG-HFM-342.

NATO C2COE and the European Union Military Staff (EUMS)

On Wednesday, October 30, 2024, the NATO NATO Command and Control Centre of Excellence and Control Centre of Excellence (NATO C2COE) had the privilege of visiting a delegation from the European Union Military Staff ( ) in Brussels. The Military Staff is the source of military expertise within the European External Action Service ( ) and has the role to provide early warning, situation assessment, strategic planning, Communications and Information Systems, concept development, training and education, as well as support of partnerships. By ensuring the EU to act militarily the EUMS strengthens diplomatic leverage.

This visit provided an opportunity to emphasize the importance of collaboration across organizations, as stated in the centres’ founding documents. In addition to its member nations, NATO C2COE actively collaborates with other military and non-military institutions to strengthen the collective expertise on Command and Control.

Joined by personnel from the Freie Universität Berlin and the German Armed Forces, discussions focused on Multi-Domain Operations ( ), shared NATO-EU military initiatives, and the challenges facing modern operations across both traditional and emerging domains.

The visit underscored the importance of collaboration and the sharing of knowledge across organizations outside the NATO structures.
