🔍 Let’s get practical: How much do thermal bridges really impact wall performance?

We compared 3 wall types with 20 cm of insulation:
1️⃣ Steel studs: Though only 2 mm thick, they cause a massive thermal bridge with a λ = 0.21, raising the wall’s U-value to 0.50 W/(m²K).
2️⃣ Timber studs (6x20 cm): They also cause a thermal bridge, but much smaller — λ = 0.04, with a U-value of 0.24 W/(m²K).
3️⃣ Undisturbed wall assembly: No thermal bridges, with a U-value of 0.18 W/(m²K).

➡️ The result?
- Steel studs increase the wall’s U-value by 178%
- Timber studs increase it by 33%
This shows just how crucial it is to account for thermal bridges in design. Even small details can have a huge impact on energy efficiency and comfort!
