The Schermerhorn family was one of the original Dutch dynasties of New York with a strong Brooklyn connection. Schermerhorn (Brooklynites tend to pronounce as Skimmerhorn) is a Dutch family name, taken from a village in North Holland. Schermerhorn Street is well-known, as well as the Hoyt-Schermerhorn subway station. This post shows that several Schermerhorn family members were actually living in Brooklyn.

Repost • The Schermerhorn house, located at 3rd Avenue and 28th Street, was a wood-frame and stone building located on the former Schermerhorn farm property. At the time of this 1883 photograph, Gowanus Bay nearly touched 3rd Avenue, today the house would be in the shadow of the BQE.
