She arrived dressed in the colours of the steppe, her eagle steady on her arm, her posture carrying the full weight of a tradition that belongs to her completely. To be received like this, by someone who holds her culture with such ease and pride, is a privilege that does not diminish with time.

Rumbur valley, Pakistan.
The Kalash festival runs through the night.
The dancing does not stop until dawn.
By the time the light comes,
the village is asleep.
Jimmy is still waiting.

People often ask me: how does one become a photographer?
It's a complicated question. There are eight billion of us now, each carrying a camera in our pocket. So the simple answer doesn't hold anymore.
The real answer is this. It's a journey. It's a choice. It's an obsession.
An obsession with detail. With wanting to record and share something that other people don't see. Or don't stop long enough to notice.
With the 10x8, I can obsessively record every fold, every stitch, every little detail. The camera forces slowness. And slowness is the only way I know how to be honest with someone.
That's what photography means to me. Not taking. Receiving.

The kap. The lace collar. The dark wool, buttoned close. A brooch at the chest, rose-gold and quiet.
This dress has been worn, in forms almost identical to this, for several centuries. Not as performance. Not as costume. As continuation.
In a region that was once considered inhospitable and strange, the people of the North-West Veluwe built something stubborn and enduring. A community, a faith, a way of moving through the world that they refused to let dissolve.
Nienke carries that with her. In the way she stands. In the way she looks past the lens, toward something only she can see.
