Videodrome (1983)
Craving a taste of MOTHERBOARD? Join us 13 May, 21:00 in anticipation of the upcoming issue 📼
Television programmer Max Renn (James Woods) seeks only to give the people what they want: ever grimier, schlockier, more provocative broadcasts. Looking to peddle the next big thing in trash TV, he is introduced to Videodrome, a s***f channel of unstaged, eroticised torture and ex*****on. This encounter triggers a hallucinatory spiral into obsession, where body and mind increasingly coagulate with the workings of the machine. Our machines may have changed their skins, but the film remains confrontationally prophetic in examining our bodily and psychological intimacy with technology. Starring the inimitable Debbie Harry as the seductive Nina Brand, Videodrome is Cronenberg at his freakiest.

ECSTASY / EXTASE - OPEN CALLÂ
What happens when religious rituals, sexual climax, and narcotic chemicals are stirred with agony into a promiscuous drink? Today, the preternatural state is reclaimed precisely to unsettle the inheritances of the hegemonic regimes that shaped its birth, childhood, and early adolescence. As much as it conjures addiction, fetishism and misogyny, it operates as a survival mechanism and a mode of resistance. What if ecstasy is not merely a loss of autonomy, tethered to revelling in our own pleasure, but an invitation to experience life differently? Not a supplement, but a way of being that refuses function and conformity; not as future potential, but in the here and now.Â
With this Open Call, Simulacrum invites artists and writers to show the ways pleasure persists as an abundant resource. We call for your involvement, in full. Find more information via the link in bio.
