We commissioned an independent scientist to test 30 lion's mane supplements sold across Europe and the UK.

The results were just published in Vitafoods Insights, one of the largest trade publications in the nutraceutical industry.

Here's what the lab found.

Beta-glucan content ranged from below 5% to 82%. Some products contained almost no detectable bioactive compounds at all. Hericenones, the compounds most associated with lion's mane's reputation, were undetectable in every single sample.

The testing was carried out by Emma Murphy at the Technological University of the Shannon, with funding from Enterprise Ireland. Not our lab. Not our results to spin. Independent testing.

We share this because you deserve to know what's actually in the products you're buying. Not to scare anyone, but because transparency is the only thing that will really move this industry forward.

Recording with and we got into something that doesn't get talked about enough.

In the EU and UK, Novel Food regulations ban the sale of certain mushroom products that haven't been authorised. Turkey Tail, Cordyceps militaris, liquid-fermented mycelium, all off limits.

These aren't fringe ingredients. Turkey Tail is one of the most studied functional mushrooms in the world. Cordyceps militaris is what most US brands sell. And liquid fermentation is one of the cleanest ways to produce mycelium without grain contamination.

Whether you agree with the regulations or not, they shape what's available to you as a consumer in Europe. Most people buying mushroom supplements have no idea that some of the products they see online aren't actually legal to sell here.

This is why we only work with species and formats that are fully authorised for the EU and UK market. Our Cordyceps is CS-4, Cordyceps sinensis, not militaris. Fully compliant, fully tested.

It's a complicated space. We talked about it for a while on the podcast. Now on Spotify

Often called the “King of Mushrooms” even though it’s technically a mycelium, not a mushroom, Chaga grows slowly on birch trees in harsh climates, developing its character over years, not weeks.

Only around 10% of a Chaga conk is actual fungal tissue. That’s why careful purification is essential: to remove inert material and a dual extraction to concentrate the main quality marker Betulinic acid, leaving behind the essence of wild Chaga as it’s been used for generations.

Quiet. Resilient. And traditionally relied on.
