What is non-binary?

Non-binary is an umbrella term for gender identities that fall outside of the normative binary female-male distinction. The term “non-binary” can indicate a specific gender identity, but can also indicate a spectrum. Some people intepret and use this term to mean ‘neither exclusively a man nor a woman’. For others, it can mean a mix of genders, or no gender at all, etc. Many (but not all) non-binary people also identify as trans, as their gender identity differs from their s*x assigned at birth.

The q***r community has used the trans and non-binary framework for decades to authentically express our identities, belongingness, but also to defy and challenge the cis-binary norm.

The most important thing is we respect each other - how we identify and express ourselves - and show solidarity, kindness, and care. 🌈🫶

March 21st is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (IDERD). The day commemorates the Sharpeville Massacre in 1960 (South Africa), when police brutality killed 69 people during a protest against apartheid “pass laws”. This year marks the 60th year since the first IDERD. Though progress has been made over the year, racism still persists in many forms and affects people of color everyday, everywhere.

Q***rtopia’s commitment to safeguarding space and well-being for q***r people goes hand in hand with our commitment to combating racism. Today, we remind ourselves and our community that there is no Q***r Liberation without Racial Justice. Q***r Liberation wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for the resistance and leadership of Black and Brown trans women.

“There is no such thing as a single-issue struggle because we do not live single-issue lives” - Audre Lorde.
