๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡น Central America spotlight: Guatemala. Oh my goodness, where do I even start. ๐Ÿ˜

Guatemala is one of the most visually stunning and culturally rich destinations. It is extraordinary.

Here's why it deserves a spot on your radar:

๐ŸŒ‹ Volcรกn Acatenango - one of the most epic overnight hikes in the world. Active lava views at sunrise. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Antigua - a UNESCO World Heritage colonial city that will take your breath away

๐ŸŒŠ Lake Atitlรกn - surrounded by volcanoes and Mayan villages. Arguably one of the most beautiful lakes on Earth.

๐ŸŽจ Indigenous Mayan culture - markets, textiles, traditions that are alive and vibrant

โ˜• Coffee - some of the world's finest grows right here

Guatemala pairs beautifully with a Costa Rica or Belize trip for the ultimate Central America adventure. ๐ŸŒฟ

๐Ÿค” All-inclusive resort vs. custom itinerary: which is right for YOU? Let's break it down. ๐Ÿ‘‡

All-Inclusive:

โœ… Easy, predictable, great for relaxation
โœ… Good for families with young kids
โœ… Budget is clear upfront
โŒ You often miss the REAL destination
โŒ Food & experience quality can vary wildly
โŒ Limited cultural immersion

Custom Itinerary:

โœ… You actually experience the country
โœ… Tailored 100% to YOUR interests & travel style
โœ… Access to boutique hotels, local experiences & hidden gems
โœ… More flexibility and authentic connection
โŒ Requires more planning (that's where I come in ๐Ÿ˜„)

Here's my honest take:

Costa Rica is too extraordinary to spend behind a resort gate. The wildlife, the landscapes, the culture, the food.

It's all OUT THERE waiting for you. ๐ŸŒฟ

That said, I respect that every traveler is different. My job is to help you figure out what's right for YOU. ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿคฟ Zip-lining through the cloud forest. Surfing at sunrise. White water rafting through the jungle. Snorkelling with sea turtles. ๐Ÿข

Yeah. Costa Rica kind of delivers on the adventure front. ๐Ÿ˜„๐ŸŒฟ

Here are some of the best adventure experiences in the country:

๐Ÿฆ… Zip-lining - Monteverde and Arenal are world-class
๐Ÿ„ Surfing - Santa Teresa, Tamarindo & Dominical for all levels
๐ŸŒŠ White water rafting - the Pacuare River is legendary
๐Ÿฌ Snorkelling & diving - Caรฑo Island is a standout
๐ŸŒ‹ Volcano hiking - Arenal, Rincรณn de la Vieja, and Poรกs are all spectacular
๐Ÿฆท Canyoning & waterfall rappelling - for the truly adventurous ๐Ÿ˜…

The best part?

So many of these can be woven into a single trip.

Costa Rica packs an almost absurd amount of adventure into a small country. ๐Ÿ’ฅ

๐Ÿ™‹ "Is Costa Rica safe?" One of the most common questions I get. Let's talk about it honestly. ๐Ÿ‘‡

The short answer: Yes, Costa Rica is generally very safe for tourists and it's consistently ranked as one of the safest countries in Central America.

But like ANY destination, it pays to be smart.

Here's what I tell my clients:

โœ… Stick to well-traveled tourist areas, especially after dark
โœ… Don't flash expensive jewelry, cameras, or phones unnecessarily
โœ… Use reputable transportation and avoid unmarked taxis
โœ… Keep copies of your important documents (passport, insurance, etc.)
โœ… Stay aware of your surroundings, especially in busy markets or city centres
โœ… Book through trusted operators with good reputations
โœ… Get travel insurance, because even in safe destinations, unexpected things happen

Costa Rica has a well-developed tourism infrastructure and locals are genuinely warm and welcoming. Millions of tourists visit every year and have wonderful, safe experiences. ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿš— Getting around Costa Rica: what you need to know before you go! ๐Ÿ‘‡

Transportation in Costa Rica is an adventure in itself.

Here's the breakdown:

๐Ÿš Shared shuttles - affordable, convenient, and great for getting between major destinations. My top recommendation for most travelers.

๐ŸšŒ Public buses - the most budget-friendly option. Slower and less comfortable, but very doable.

๐Ÿš™ Rental car - great for flexibility, especially if you want to explore off the beaten path. 4WD is highly recommended for the green season! Roads can be... spirited. ๐Ÿ˜„

โœˆ๏ธ Domestic flights - small prop planes connecting major regions. A genuine adventure and huge time-saver for covering large distances.

๐Ÿš Helicopter transfers - yes, this is a thing! A luxury option for getting to remote destinations in style.

Pro tip: distances on a map in Costa Rica are DECEIVING. A 100km drive can take 3+ hours. Always factor in more time than you think you need. โฐ

๐ŸŒบ Psst. I'm planning something very special for February. ๐Ÿ‘€

Lang Signature Travel Curated Luxury Group Trip: Costa Rica ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ท
February 1โ€“7, 2026

February is arguably the BEST time to visit Costa Rica. It's the height of the dry season: sunny skies, warm temps, and absolutely perfect beach and jungle conditions. ๐ŸŒž

I'm designing this trip to be intimate, luxurious, and genuinely transformative.

Think:

๐Ÿจ Carefully selected boutique luxury accommodations
๐ŸŒ‹ Iconic Costa Rica experiences (think: waterfalls, wildlife, adventure)
๐ŸŒŠ Beach time on the stunning Pacific coast
๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Incredible dining, vegan-friendly throughout
๐Ÿ‘ฅ A small, like-minded group of amazing humans
๐Ÿ’š Every detail handled so you can just show up and enjoy

This is the kind of trip that changes how you see the world, and yourself.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Money tips for traveling to Costa Rica, because this stuff matters! ๐Ÿ‘‡

The currency: Costa Rican Colรณn (CRC), but USD is widely accepted in tourist areas. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Should you exchange before you go? You can, but it's often easier to withdraw colones from ATMs when you arrive. Just notify your bank before you travel!

Are credit cards accepted? Yes, widely, especially Visa and Mastercard. Always carry some cash for smaller vendors, markets, and rural areas.

Is Costa Rica expensive? It's more expensive than some Central American countries, but absolutely manageable with the right planning. Green season (Mayโ€“Oct) is the best time to stretch your budget! ๐Ÿ’š

Watch out for: Dynamic currency conversion at ATMs. Always choose to pay in the LOCAL currency to get the best rate.

Tip culture: Tipping is appreciated! 10% at restaurants is standard if a service charge isn't already included.

Little things like this can make a big difference in your experience. ๐Ÿ˜Š

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Let's talk about the food in Costa Rica, because it deserves WAY more attention than it gets. ๐Ÿคค

Costa Rican cuisine is fresh, simple, and deeply satisfying.

Here's what to expect:

๐Ÿš Gallo pinto - the beloved rice and beans dish eaten at virtually every breakfast. Honestly, it's addictive.
๐Ÿฅ˜ Casado - a traditional plate with rice, beans, plantains, salad & protein. Pure comfort food.
๐ŸŒฝ Tamales - especially around the holidays. Wrapped in banana leaves and absolutely delicious.
๐Ÿฅญ Fresh tropical fruit - mango, papaya, pineapple, starfruit... eaten daily and life-changing.
โ˜• Costa Rican coffee - some of the best in the WORLD. You will not drink mediocre coffee here. โ˜•

And the restaurant scene?

It has exploded. From farm-to-table eco-lodges to incredible beach front restaurants steps from the beach, Costa Rica's culinary scene is thriving. ๐ŸŒฟ
