Ghigho Aghofen (Palace Watch) is a significant cultural event in the Warri Kingdom, which celebrates the traditional handing-over ceremony where the a particular Community (outgoing community) transfers responsibility to the incoming community to watch over the Royal Palace (AGHOFEN) for the next quarter.
The event was initiated by Ogiame Atuwatse III, CFR the Olu of Warri Kingdom, in December 2021, as part of his efforts to promote the cultural heritage of the Itsekiri people.
The first edition of Ghigho Aghofen was held on December 18, 2021, and has since become a quarterly event, with different communities taking turns to watch over the palace .
Ghigho Aghofen is not just a cultural event, but also an opportunity for the communities to showcase their rich cultural heritage, traditions, and history.
The event features various cultural displays, including dances, music, and theatrical performances.
The initiative has been successful in promoting unity and social bonding among the communities in the Warri Kingdom.
It has also helped to educate people about the history and cultural significance of the Itsekiri people.
The significance of Ghigho Aghofen lies in several key aspects:
1. **Cultural Promotion and Preservation**: The ceremony provides a platform for vibrant displays of Itsekiri culture through dance, music, fashion, and traditional performances. It also welcomes participation from other ethnic groups residing in the kingdom—such as the Urhobo, Igbo, Yoruba, Ijaw, and Ilaje—highlighting the diversity and unity within the region.
2. **Strengthening Community Ties**: By assigning communities the role of palace watch, the Olu fosters a closer relationship between the monarchy and his subjects.
The king often visits the community on duty, drawing attention to their needs and promoting development, which enhances the bond between the palace and the people.
3. **Peace and Unity**: Ghigho Aghofen emphasizes peaceful coexistence and collaboration among the various communities and ethnic groups. It serves as a unifying event, encouraging dialogue and mutual respect, as seen in the participation of neighbouring monarchs and dignitaries from across Nigeria.
4. **Tourism and Economic Potential**: The festival has transformed Warri into a cultural hub, attracting tourists, diaspora Itsekiri, and visitors who witness the rich heritage on display. This aligns with the Olu’s vision to leverage tourism for wealth creation and engagement within the kingdom
5. **Historical Continuity**: With a history spanning over 545 years, the Warri Kingdom uses Ghigho Aghofen to celebrate its legacy while adapting traditions to contemporary times, ensuring that its cultural narrative remains relevant and dynamic.
In essence, Ghigho Aghofen is a celebration of identity, resilience, and collective stewardship, reinforcing the palace as the central rallying point for the Itsekiri nation and beyond. It reflects Ogiame Atuwatse III’s innovative leadership in blending tradition with progress, making it a cornerstone of his reign since its inception.
