**Chapter 22**
**“Keep your paws off my woman,”** came a deep, cold voice.
They turned their attention to where the voice came from and saw Vincenzo walking in with the men he had left with earlier.
Camilla immediately stood from the bench and walked to him. **“How was it? Did the police catch the truck driver?”** she asked, her tone filled with worry.
**“Everything went fine. And no, the truck driver is still a mystery,”** he lied, not wanting to tell her where he had actually gone.
**“Oh,”** she mouthed.
**“What’s up, big brother? Just wanted to say—I have palms, not paws,”** Gabriele said, bringing his cheerful spirit into the moment, making Vincenzo glare at him.
**“Has the doctor said anything yet?”** Vincenzo asked.
**“Nothing since you left,”** Camilla answered.
**“What the f**k is wrong with these people? Don’t they know how to do their f**king job?”** he fumed.
**“Calm down, Cenzo. These people are professionals. Let them do their job,”** Gabriele said and led him to the bench. **“Sit down,”** he ordered, and Vincenzo did.
Just seconds later, one of the doctors came out with two nurses walking behind him, carrying some tools on their tray.
Vincenzo and Camilla sprang to their feet as soon as they saw him.
**“Doctor, can we see her now?”** Vincenzo asked.
**“I’ll see to that,”** the doctor said before entering the room.
**“Ouch,”** Gabriele said mockingly, pushing Vincenzo’s buttons.
Vincenzo glared at him. **“Why are you still here? Don’t you have lectures tomorrow?”**
Gabriele rolled his eyes. **“My life,”** he answered.
The door to Francesca’s room opened, and the doctor walked out with the nurses.
**“Doctor,”** Camilla called.
**“You can see her now, but please be as quiet as possible. I’ll go check on the other patient,”** he said before excusing himself, the nurses trailing behind him.
Gabriele rushed in, but Vincenzo stood frozen behind. Camilla had expected him to be the first in the room after the doctor gave them permission, but here he was, standing like a statue—as if his legs were glued to the floor.
He wanted to see Francesca badly, but he was afraid of seeing her in her current state. He was a mafia don, unused to showing his emotions. But something terrible had happened to someone he truly loved, and he couldn’t suppress his feelings. No matter how hard he tried to hide them, they surfaced whenever Camilla was around—and he hated that.
He couldn’t possibly break down in front of his guards. They looked up to him.
Before Camilla could utter a word, he walked past her into the room. She shrugged and trailed behind.
Gabriele was sitting beside Francesca, his hands wrapped around hers. His face was twisted in a frown, as if he was struggling to control his emotions.
A gasp escaped Camilla’s lips, and she quickly covered her mouth. Vincenzo stared at Francesca with an unreadable expression, his face void of all emotion. Camilla glanced between Vincenzo and Francesca.
She looked so pale—her lips were bruised, her head bandaged. Different machines were wired to her, their steady beeps filling the room.
She looked half-dead, but she was alive. She was breathing.
Camilla walked to Vincenzo and hugged him. She knew he was trying his best not to tear up in front of her, Francesca, and Gabriele.
**“Let it out. Cry on my shoulder,”** she whispered.
He wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her into a tight hug.
**“Camilla,”** he whispered, his voice almost breathless.
**“Shhh, she’ll wake up. Remember? The doctor said she’s out of danger,”** she reassured him, tightening her arms around his neck. **“Cry on me when we’re alone,”** she whispered into his ear before kissing his neck.

# # # **Later That Night**
**“Goodnight, everyone!”** Holly waved at the rest of the team, and they responded with a chorus of **“Goodnight!”**
She turned to her left and saw Sophia still standing there.
Earlier, they had decided to eat and drink at a restaurant after work. The day had been chaotic with Vincenzo and Camilla’s absence, so they wanted to unwind before heading home to sleep.
**“Your house is that way,”** Holly pointed to the left. **“Or did your car break down like mine? Are you catching the bus too?”**
Sophia let out a tired sigh. **“Let’s go. I’ll drop you off.”**
**“Really? You?”** Holly questioned, but Sophia was already walking away. **“Wait for me!”** she called, running after her.
Opportunities like this were rare—Sophia wasn’t close with the other staff. It was always just Sophia and Camilla, but lately, it seemed like they weren’t friends anymore.
Holly caught up and slid into Sophia’s car. **“Nice car,”** she complimented.
**“The only compliment I care about is my man telling me I’m beautiful,”** Sophia said, shocking Holly.
**“Okay, my bad. I’ll keep my mouth shut, I guess,”** Holly muttered, buckling her seatbelt.
Sophia turned the key, and the engine roared to life. The car pulled onto the road, the drive silent until Holly spoke again.
**“You didn’t ask for my address.”**
**“I saw it already in your file,”** Sophia replied.
**“Oh,”** Holly mouthed.
Silence stretched between them until Sophia took a turn.
**“You can ask me,”** Sophia suddenly said.
**“Huh?”** Holly glanced at her.
**“I know you have a lot of questions. Now’s your chance.”**
**“Why don’t you talk to the rest of the team? And what happened between you and Camilla? You used to be close, but now you act like enemies. I noticed it in the coffee room.”**
**“I’m introverted. Whatever happened between me and Camilla is none of your business, so keep your curiosity to yourself. Please.”**
**“Okay,”** Holly said, turning back to face the front.
**“Here’s my house. You can stop here,”** she said.
Sophia pulled over.
**“Thank you,”** Holly said with a smile, hopping out of the car. She waved at Sophia through the window.
Sophia rolled the window down. **“I guess we’re neighbors. My house is the one opposite yours.”**
**“Oh, really? How come we’ve never seen each other?”**
**“Talk to you later,”** Sophia said before Holly waved a final goodbye and ran into her house.
Sophia rolled her eyes and drove into her garage. She stepped out with her purse, handbag, and laptop before walking into the house.
As she entered, she immediately sensed something was off. The lights were on—unusual, since Ryder never left them on.
*Who the hell is in my house?*
She bent down slowly, staying alert. She slipped off her heels and stood straight.
**“Show yourself,”** she commanded.
“Hi.”
