Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission say their visit to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital was to verify a medical report submitted by a fraud suspect on trial before Justice M.A. Onyetenu of the Federal High Court in Uyo.
The explanation was contained in a statement issued by the EFCC Uyo Zonal Directorate.
The commission said it had written twice to the hospital without response before its officers visited on Tuesday, where tensions reportedly rose after staff confrontation.
It added that its operatives exercised restraint and left peacefully, warning that obstruction of investigations is a criminal offence.

The Nigeria Police Force in Akwa Ibom State has denied reports that its officers assaulted staff or used force at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, calling the claims false and misleading.
The statement, issued by Police Public Relations Officer DSP Timfon John on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, said the incident involved a lawful operation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
It said police were only deployed after the hospital’s Chief Medical Director raised an alarm over armed men on the premises. The command added that officers confirmed the EFCC operation on arrival and were not involved in any assault, teargas use, or violence.
A viral video from Tansian University in Omunya, Anambra State, showing a man being assaulted by students has sparked confusion online, with initial claims alleging misconduct in a female hostel.
However, other accounts dispute this, saying the narrative is unverified and may be misleading.
One version claims the man, a Reverend Father, was not caught in wrongdoing but may have entered the hostel while fleeing an internal dispute linked to the legacy of the university’s late founder, Monsignor John-Bosco Akam. The incident has raised concerns over misinformation and the need for proper verification.
