These are women from the Mursi tribe in Ethiopia.
The Mursi (or Mun as they refer to themselves) are a Surmic ethnic group in Ethiopia.
They principally reside in the Debub Omo Zone of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People's Region, close to the border with South Sudan.
Lips deformation is part of their culture.
Historians hold that the practice started in the days of slævery.
They would deform their lips so as to look ugly in the eyes of the whites and it eventually became part of their culture.
These plates are said to be attractive to their men. The larger the plate, the bigger the dowry to be paid in terms of cows.
The custom of wearing a lip plate is also linked to the female’s fertility n eligibility for marriage. When a Mursi girl reaches puberty (around age 15 to 16) she will have her lip cut by a female member of the tribe and a small wooden stick is inserted.
The lip is then slowly stretched over a period of time.
It is said that a woman who does not wear a lip plate is considered lazy and will not warrant a large dowry or bridal wealth.
With some lip plates reaching up to 12 cm in diameter, it is certainly a mark of beauty, perseverance n bravery on the woman who wears it.
It connotes strength and faithfulness among women.
Some also think it helps the woman not to talk too much in a home to avoid marital fights with her husband.
