We are currently celebrating AMR awareness week, what do you know about Antimicrobial resistance and have you ever heard about it before?

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is when drugs used to treat microbes such as bacteria and fungi no longer work.
This is because those microbes have developed mechanisms that enable them to evade or inactive the drug and even modify drug targets.

AMR has mostly been linked to indiscriminate antimicrobial use in human, consumption of antimicrobial residue in animals and a lot of others.
Most available antimicrobials have been abused and when microbes are fully resistant to these drugs, it means that people will die not because of drugs unavailability but because, the available drugs are no longer working for the diseases.

Antimicrobial resistance is a global menace and kills millions of people worldwide every year. In 2019, 5 million deaths was associated with AMR and it is expected that 10 million people will die annually from AMR by 2050.

It is important to see a doctor when you are sick and properly complete your doses of antibiotics.
