Mechatronics students at the Federal University of Technology Owerri have created a drone for surveillance, mapping, and environmental monitoring, showcasing innovation and technical skill.

Revolutionary Creation Set to Transform Surveillance, Mapping, and Environmental Monitoring

Mechatronics students at the Federal University of Technology Owerri have achieved a groundbreaking feat, designing and building a cutting-edge drone tailored for surveillance, mapping, and environmental monitoring. This innovative creation showcases the students' exceptional technical skills and ingenuity.

A Multifaceted Solution

The drone, engineered with precision and attention to detail, boasts an array of features that make it an invaluable asset in various fields:

- Surveillance: Equipped with high-resolution cameras, the drone provides real-time monitoring and surveillance capabilities, ideal for security operations, search and rescue missions, and infrastructure inspection.

- Mapping: Utilizing advanced GPS and mapping technologies, the drone can generate accurate topographical maps, facilitating urban planning, environmental studies, and disaster response efforts.

- Environmental Monitoring: Fitted with sensors to track temperature, humidity, and air quality, the drone enables researchers and scientists to gather vital data on environmental conditions, supporting climate change research and conservation initiatives.

A Testament to Innovation and Technical Expertise

The development of this drone is a shining example of the ingenuity and technical prowess of the Mechatronics students at FUTO. By leveraging their knowledge of robotics, electronics, and computer programming, the students have created a solution that addresses real-world challenges and showcases the vast potential of homegrown innovation.

The Future of Drone Technology

As drone technology continues to evolve, the possibilities for its application expand exponentially. The innovative drone designed by FUTO

The VC Commissions State-of-the-Art Building, Vehicle For FUTO CE-sPESS

The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Prof. Mrs. Nnenna N. Oti, on 24th March 2025, graciously commissioned a building newly built by the University's Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards (CE-sPESS).

The foundation level of the State-of-the-Art structure, built for the activities of the FUTO CE-sPESS, commenced barely a few months back.

It's noteworthy that just in August 2024, the Centre thoroughly renovated an edifice owned by the FUTO Women Association (FUTOWA), which marked the second time such rebranding project would be done on campus by the CE-sPESS.

The newly built edifice, regarded as the Main Building of the Centre, was commissioned alongside a brand-new Hiance bus. It could be recalled that new Coaster bus and Hilux Patrol were procured by the CE-sPESS two years back.

In her Speech, the VC - Prof. Oti - who was overwhelmed by what she meant on ground, strongly lauded the FUTO CE-sPESS Team led by Engr. Prof. Gloria Chukwudebe.

Prof. Oti, stated that she was very surprised that a building project that was initiated a few months ago, came into completion on a record time. According to her, it takes only a capable and reliable hand for such an achievement to come into display within a short period.

The VC equally used the opportunity to extend hand of appreciation to her predecessor, Prof. Francis C. Eze, who under his watch, the CE-sPESS was conceived and established in the University along with other centres of Excellence.

Earlier on the occasion, in her Welcome Address, the Centre Director, Prof. Mrs. Chukwudebe thanked everyone who played a vital role towards actualization of the building project, particularly the VC and the FUTO Management.

In a remarkable achievement, four students - Ekeh Isidore, Kizito Onyema, Aloysius Nwokedike, and John Kenedy Kalu - from Federal University of Technology Owerri's engineering program developed a sophisticated quadcopter surveillance drone in 2018, boasting a wooden controller and advanced First Person View capabilities, to improve campus security and monitoring.
