Let’s talk about calculations in Chemistry today.
I’m not sure whether I would agree that calculations in Chemistry are more complex than those in Physics, but I can confidently say that Chemistry calculations can be less complex and easily understood if you do these things.
First, understand the basics of Chemistry. You shouldn't rush into a battle without knowing what you’re up against.
Chemistry is all about CPSU—Composition, Properties, Structure, and Uses of Matter. This is a major concept to grasp because if you understand what anything on this Earth is made of, you can better comprehend its properties, structure, and uses. The foundation of Chemistry is understanding what things are made of—their composition.
This composition is broken down into three segments, each represented by an acronym.
Here’s a simple breakdown:
ECM: Every type of matter is either an Element (E), a Compound (C), or a Mixture (M).
AMI: These elements, compounds, or mixtures are made up of Atoms (A), Molecules (M), or Ions (I).
PEN: Inside these, you’ll find the subatomic particles—Protons (P), Electrons (E), and Neutrons (N).
You need to understand how these nine components—element, compound, mixture, atom, molecule, ion, proton, electron, and neutron—work together, how they are intertwined, and how they collaborate. This is the foundation from which all Chemistry calculations are derived.
To build a strong foundation in Chemistry, study and grasp these basics. Everything else flows from this understanding.
